Frequently Asked Questions

Question: When is the next session of the school?

Answer: For the first time in our 30-year history, we re going to cram 10 days of learning into 8 days so more people can attend. Our next session will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017 – Saturday, July 15, 2017 right outside Nashville on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

Question: How do I get in contact with the school?

Question: How much musical training do I need in order to be a student?

Answer: You need to know what a song is and Well, that s just about it. If you have a desire to learn, it doesn t matter how little you know. We can meet you right where you are and teach you more than you probably thought possible in the time you spend with us.

Question: Will there be people my age?

Answer: At 2015 s school, we had students from 9 to 78. Almost a third of our students were over 40 and half were under 20, so there is a wide range of ages.

Answer: Children must be 8 years of age or older to participate in our school. Students 15 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult staying in the same room. No one over the age of 145 may attend. (We would like to talk to you, though, to see how you made it that far.)

Question: What are the fees?

Answer: The fees for Ben Speer s Stamps-Baxter School of Music are:

$ 35 Application Fee (non-refundable)

$290 Dorm Room shared with another person (if staying on campus)

$ 25 Linen Rental (optional)

$290 Meal Plan (optional) (Unless you eat all three meals every day, it s less expensive to buy your meals as you go.)

Individual Private Lessons are $125 for five half-hour lessons (optional).

Private Lessons for an existing group are $375 for five one-hour lessons (optional).

Question: Do I have to pay all my fees before I get to school?

Answer: No, you can bring the balance with you when you check in.

Question: What is the cost of a person staying on campus with an underage child?

Answer: As a Guardian, you will be charged the Application Fee and the Room Fee, but no Tuition Fee.

Question: Can a Guardian participate in all activities?

Answer: A Guardian may sit in the auditorium during Devotions/Announcements, Group Singing, Vocal Technique, Performance Training, Concerts and Open Mic, but it is requested that Guardians not ask questions or otherwise disturb the events.

Question: Can I take more than one set of private lessons?

Answer: Yes. In fact, we encourage it. Since you re where there are such great teachers available to you, why not take advantage of their knowledge and experience?

Question: I m only interested in private lessons. Can I just come and take them?

Answer: Sorry, you must be registered as a Student or Guardian in order to take private lessons. And we think most private lesson teachers would agree that Theory Class will help you learn more in your private lessons.

Question: Is it possible to get a private room?

Answer: Yes, it is possible, but a bit pricey. There are two beds in each room and to get a private room you would be charged double.

Question: What time is check in / check out?

Answer: Check in is on Saturday morning, July 8, from 8:00 till noon. Special arrangements can be made to check you in if you arrive later in the day or even a day or two later. Check out is Sunday, July 16, from 6:00am till noon.

Question: What is the normal daily schedule?

Question: What is the cost of a person staying on campus with an underage child?

Answer: As a Guardian, you will be charged the Application Fee and the Room Fee, but no Tuition Fee.

Question: How big is the campus and how much walking is involved?

Answer: From Monahan Dorm to the Wright Music Building where all our sessions are held is one mile and takes about 21 minutes to walk. From Wright to the cafeteria is a third of a mile and takes about five minutes to walk. A chauffeur-driven golf cart is available for those who have difficulty walking.

Question: How many meals are included in the meal plan and when are they? Does it include Saturdays and Sundays?

Answer: The MTSU meal plan includes breakfast, lunch and supper Monday through Friday only. Unless you will eat at the cafeteria three meals a day for all five days, you will probably save a good bit of money by buying meals as you need them.

Question: What kind of clothing do I need to bring to school?

Answer: The dress for school should be comfortable but students are expected to err on the side of modesty. Students need to bring dress clothes (Sunday clothes) to wear for the Closing Program. If you plan to audition for the Closing Program, you should be prepared to dress for your audition as well.

Question: What is provided in the dorm room?

Answer: In each dorm room the university provides two single beds, two chests, two desks with lights and two wardrobes. Each wardrobe has a section to hang items and several shelves for storage. Each room’s temperature is controlled by an in-room thermostat. Rooms DO NOT have mirrors, sinks or toilets.
