Massage Therapy Program Overview

Today, you’ll not only find massage therapists working in day spas, hotels and resorts, but also in hospitals, convalescent homes and physical rehabilitation clinics.

Because massage therapy has multiple purposes, it also comes in many forms. You may already be familiar with styles of massage, such as Swedish, Thai, Japanese (Shiatsu) and Hawaiian (Lomilomi). There are also styles of massage specifically designed to address the needs of pregnant women (pre-natal massage) and athletes who’ve suffered minor injuries (sports massage). Other common variations include deep-tissue massage, hot stone massage and reflexology, which focuses exclusively on the feet.

Everest’s Massage Therapy program provides the basic knowledge, tools, ethics and behaviors you need to understand to successfully practice as a massage therapist in a variety of settings.

Note: Program schedules and availability vary by campus.

Massage Therapy Careers

The number of massage therapists is projected to grow 22% through 2024, which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics considers to be “much faster” than the average for all occupations. Continued growth in the demand for massage services will lead to new openings for massage therapists.

Some of the more common areas of employment for massage therapists include:

  • Massage studios and day spas: You’ve probably seen dozens of massage studios open around town in recent years. They’re often found in shopping centers and office complexes.
  • Hotels & Resorts: Many hotels and resorts have on-site spas that employee professional massage therapists. These spas may be owned by the facility itself or be franchised to an independent operator.
  • Cruise Ships: Virtually all modern cruise ships have spas, often operated by outside companies. Working on such a ship gives you the opportunity to practice your profession and see the world at the same time!
  • Hospitals: Many hospitals now have massage therapists on staff to help patients who are undergoing painful physical rehabilitation or cancer therapy.
  • Medical and Rehabilitation Clinics: Many physical therapists regularly prescribe massage for clients who are recovering from injuries.
  • Sports Organizations: Professional and semi-professional sports teams often employ massage therapists to help keep their players flexible and pain-free.

You also have the option of opening an independent massage therapy business. Many massage therapists choose to work independently. They set their own prices and schedules. They offer their services at home or travel to their clients’ homes or places of business to deliver services. In short, massage therapy is a field that offers you plenty of options to fit your individual needs and lifestyle.

Note: Program availability, version and schedules vary by campus. Please check your campus catalog for specific details about which massage therapy programs programs are available.

*Your own hard work, professionalism, experience, work attitude, local market and other factors will impact your personal employment opportunities and pay.
